The first two issues of Talon Marks have been disappointing

So far I have been disappointed with the first two issues of Talon Marks. That is if you want to know the truth from someone who has been with TM before. At the right is a copy of the second issue and yet, I still find mistakes throughout the paper.

First, and foremost, is spell check. I mean, I have to say that Mr. Editor-in-chief is not doing his job. Second, what is the deal with all of the extra space for the photo captions. I mean that to me says that your editors have no idea whatelse to put. I think that the editors need to keep in mind that there is additional information that you can put on a caption if you SEE the need to. I know that the editors have seen previous issues and know what's important.

The details is what I pay attention to and it starts with photos. They have been too dark to see that there is no way of telling who they are. Sure, that the names are there on paper, but there needs to be ID. You have to understand, however, that there are newcomers to Talon Marks and that there is room for improvement.

Among the things that are missing from the TM newspaper:

• Photos are stretched
• Names misspelled
• No spell check
• Photo captions with insufficient information
• Staff and administration missing their titles
• There are no bylines for a few of the photos
• Photos are too dark
• Leads are all wrong
• And finally the current editor-in-chief who should NOT be in this position (J5, where are you?)

There still is time for all of those involved to get it right...but with the first two I don't see it. That's why it has been disappointing. One last thing that I would suggest Mr. Editor-in-chief to pay attention to is the fact that there needs to be a seperation of story like on page three of the Arts page there is no line between the movie review of "Becoming Jane" to the Art Gallery review/preview. The story combine make it confusing as to who wrote what. If you don't see it, it is because I do. Pay attention!

He is the first to give me flowers

Media Credit: Norma

Hey all! Well, I have to say that former Cerritos student Roger Hills, Jr. is the first guy to give me flowers. He came to Cerritos College last Thursday to perform with the duo Real Estate and also wanted to thank me for writing an article on him last year. I thought, "Wow! How nice!" I was so flattered I turned red. Anyway, it is true that he is the first to give me flowers and I think that is cool. You know something I feel so happy about it that it makes me feel good that someone at least appreicated enough to remember something almost a year ago (December to be exact). But I guess that is what happens when you are in journalism. People remember you.

That is what's happening lately, that is people coming up to me and saying hi and asking if I am still on Talon Marks. I tell them no because I am taking a break. Mind you, I am horrible when it comes to names and for that matter faces...but it comes with meeting new people everyday. Well, I just wanted to tell Roger Hills thank you for the flowers I am flattered by what you didn't have to do.

Happy Birthday to Madonna!

Today is Madonna birthday! Happy 49th birthday to the Queen of Pop. I can't believe it but she looks amazing. And her fans (that includes me) have seen this woman be the person that everyone else wants to be but we know that there is only one Madonna. I remember her as being the person who everyone wanted to be and of course at the start of her career the invasion of the Madonna wannabes. Yet, through every period that she has gone through (Like A Virgin-crucifix wearing-boytoy, to Erotica sex fanasting-f-word saying, to the eternal-Mother, and Disco-Dancing diva) she has created a career that nobody can match. And to be in the industry for 25 years...I can honestly say I can't wait for the next 25 years because of course everyone will be watching...

If I could I would write for free

During the summer I have had time to think about "Life after Talon Marks" and I've come to the conclusion that I would honestly consider writing for free. Yeah, you heard right. Write for free. I don't care about money anyway. And besides when you die, rememeber you don't keep the money you make. Well, at least I will attend the ASCC Senate today and let the Senators in on the news about the internship at the Los Angeles Times. That will be fun and I get to see the people whom I've covered in the last year too. I just hope that I remember what to say. Well, I will see what happens and get back to you.

A Semester without Talon Marks

The time has arrived with me without Talon Marks. I never thought that this day would get here but it's here. And I have to be honest, I was so used to having something to do and write that as I said my hellos to everyone I felt 'naked' without the use of a notepad and pen and pencil.

But then I realized that what I did and the decision I made were right for me. I like that. As I toward the next step with gaining an experience with the Los Angeles Times I can't wait to see what's at the end of this journey. Well, as always, I visited the TM office and say hello to everyone because all of them treated me with kindness and that I never forget.

Norma, the next intern at the L.A. Times?

Although the start of the semester is approaching Monday and I have a final this Thursday I have some news about a future internship at the Los Angeles Times (J5, are you listening?). I have decided that I will take a chance and applying for an internship that will happen in the Summer of 2008.

I just sent an e-mail out to people on campus and explained what I was going to do this semester as far as getting the information and turning it in by the Jan. 1, 2008 deadline. As far as preparing the information of 12 sample works, recommendations, and personal statement, I am still working on the latter. I have to be honest about something though, I have never though of getting to this point in my life where I would be enthusiastic about wanting to make something out of myself.

However, that all change when I realized the journalist was inside of me for a long time. Yet, I think that it should not matter that it takes you years to figure it out. No, it is more that I finally realized what makes me happy. Being a journalist makes me happy. When the e-mail was sent to me about this opportunity I was about to let it pass me by.

No, I am ready for the pressure situation of deadline. Of not sleeping and of getting the information out there as quickly as possible. Being on the Cerritos College Talon Marks student newspaper was just the beginning and without those within Talon Marks, our adviser (Look, I spelled "adviser" right) and everyone I have met I don't know what I would be doing. It would probably being something that I would not be happy with.

Well, I will be back next week as the semester starts and let you know about another semester and write about interesting things that happen. And I will keep you updated as the day approaches for that internship. I, personally, can't wait to see what is on the other side of the rainbow.

And so it begins...

Norma will be at a bookstore near you

Greetings college students!
I am going in for training tomorrow as I begin to help out at the Cerritos College bookstore. When I found out that I was going to be there I was so excited that my parents were the first to say 'Yay!' However, I want to personally thank the manager of the bookstore. I will work hard every day, just as if I were at a newspaper office. So, if you need help remember Norma is at a bookstore near you.

The end of Harry Potter but I plan...

I finished "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" by J.K. Rowling yesterday and I have to say that I was glad that it ended the way it should have ended. And now that I reached the end of the series that has captured the attention of children and adults around the world I understood the relationship of "You-Know-Who" or "He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named" and our boy wizard. As it is I will do one thing...I do plan to re-read the series again and that way the series will NEVER end because as fans of Harry Potter that is the way to keep it going...and that is keep on reading to your heart's content.

One more chapter

I am down to the last chapter before I get to the 19 years later part of the book. I am so excited and I can't wait to read what happens to our heroes. And yet I am sad that Harry Potter is over. But I will start over again and re-read the books, so that it never ends. Well, it has been fun reading all of the adventures of Potter and the gang I will be sadden that all of us will not be waiting in line for another Potter book. Hopefully one day again...will come...
